Story + Concept

Sow and Weep is a play which takes an intimate look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as told through the eyes of two families, one from each side of the battle line. Pulled deep into the Israeli/Palestinian conflict by the pain of sudden loss, a Palestinian law student and an Israeli peace activist seek a way out only to discover confrontation is their only hope. The play asks us to question the walls we put between ourselves and the Other Side.

For this show, my co-designer Taylor Ashbrook and I wanted to bring the story to life as realistically as possible to honor the very real and ongoing conflict which affects millions of lives. We researched and sourced assorted ‘thobe,’ the traditional Palestinian dress,, as well as the various military uniforms worn throughout the region and juxtaposed these systematic garments against the more liberal, Western-inspired apparel worn by the increasingly reformist characters. Our palette was composed of predominantly warm and hot tones to further depict the contentious subject matter.
