Everywhere We Go

Everywhere We Go opened the 2014 Spring Gala; it was choreographed by Justin Peck, score by Sufjan Stevens, and costumes designed by former principal dancer Janie Taylor. According to Peck, “This ballet is about going places: everywhere and nowhere. The more we move the more shadows we cast. Innocence, gone. Experience weighs heavy and light. Shadows need light! This ballet is about friendship and love. This ballet is about being alone. This ballet is about breaking apart, reuniting, reconciling. This ballet is about companionship and the autonomy of life in spite of society. This ballet is about knowing we are going to die alone, revel in the camaraderie of the here and now.”

The shop worked with Ms. Taylor to create graphic, dancer-friendly leotards. The striped fabric was custom printed and the red leather belts custom made for each dancer. From Marie Claire Magazine: “The designs echo a principle of City Ballet's founder, George Balanchine, whose "leotard ballets" were once considered revolutionary for presenting the dance form without scenery or elaborate costume. ‘One thing Balanchine liked about leotards was that there was nothing extra and you could see the choreography,’ Taylor said.”
