La Sylphide

La Sylphide tells the story of a human man who falls in love with an ethereal woodland creature on the eve of his wedding day. Originally staged in 1836, it first came to NYC Ballet only in 2015; it was previously staged by Peter Martins with the Pennsylvania Ballet in 1985. For its 2015 premiere, Martins retained the original costume + set designer from 1985, Susan Tammany. Together with Ms. Tammany, the costume shop worked to bring her designs to fruition. My job was to source all the fabrics, kilts, hats (‘caubeens’), sporrans and yes — fairy wings. Photo above by Thomas Iannaccone for WWD.com.
