Harlequinade

From Fjord Review : “Set to a bouncy, tuneful score by Riccardo Drigo and made in the tradition of Italian commedia dell’arte, Harlequinade tells the story about Harlequin and his improbable escapades on a quest to win the heart and the hand of the lovely Columbine, daughter of the rich merchant Cassandre, who wants to marry her off to a wealthy fop, Léandre.”

NYC Ballet re-mounted this reproduction in 2015, fifty years after Balanchine staged it in 1965. The original costumes were designed by Rouben Ter-Arutunian, and after fifty years of wear, were in need of serious repairs. As the shop rebuilt the costumes, I was charged with sourcing only materials which matched the original design as closely as possible. Several duchess silk satin colors had to be custom woven, and all of the dozens upon dozens of pom poms were remade by hand.
